Found the Wal-Mart of Turkey today. They call it Migros, and I suppose it’s a handy place. Would be a lot handier if one had a vehicle. Once we found it (3/4 mile walk), we got a little shopping-cart happy with things like a box fan, a dust mop, trash can, plus a bunch of groceries & cleaning supplies. So that of course meant we needed to find & cram ourselves and stuff into a cab for the ride home.
The food stuffs here get a thumbs-up from me, for the most part. Fruits and vegetables are fresh and abundant, whether you get them at the larger stores like Migros or Carrefour, or at some random small market in a neighborhood. We still haven’t found peaches as large and as awesome as at that store the other day. Chicken is good, though maybe not as hormone-fattened as at home. Lots of beef products we haven’t tried yet, considering we lack a grill and need to re-learn how to cook with an oven. I like fish, so I’m not too freaked out that it sits in the displays with heads & tails & guts & scales, but very much appreciate that the dude behind the counter will remove all that stuff before we take it home. For some reason, the fact that we live in a completely foreign place seems to be a good enough excuse for us to try new foods – we’ve added lentils and bulgar to our sparse cabinet so far, and Dennis did even try that Ayran Yogurt drink (think drinking plain yogurt that’s salty…ick). But I also have my Special K with red berries, fat-free Dannon yogurt, and Nutella to make me feel better. I am even over the fact that milk comes in an un-refrigerated cardboard carton. But, I found the skim milk and we put it in our fridge, so it’s basically just like at home…when you put it on cereal. I don’t care how close it is, I’m still not drinking that stuff straight. I don’t really even know what animal it comes from, or how in the heck they can leave it at room temperature. I’ve long confessed to milk-snobbiness, and I accept it as fact.
And, success! We found a stationary store (stumbled across is more correct), so now not only do we have a printer, but we can print things!

Do they pasteurize milk/everything else?
